New Zealand financial advisers face regulatory changes

New Zealand’s ethical investing awards took center stage at Mindful Money’s recent conference, highlighting a growing focus on positive‑outcome funds among retail investors.

Pathfinder and Generate Lead the Pack

At the ceremony, the award for best positive outcomes integration went to Pathfinder, which secured the honor again after demonstrating extensive work on themes such as community housing bonds and a sizable investment in the Icehouse innovation hub. The fund’s recent allocation to the Motion Capital venture capital fund and its support for initiatives like Wool Aid were cited as evidence of its commitment to both avoiding harm and backing “good stuff.”

Another fund, Generate, received high commendation for pioneering community‑housing bonds and its substantial backing of the Icehouse program, which aims to give every New Zealand resident a share in local innovation. Both winners exemplify a trend toward funds that embed responsible investing directly into their strategies.

Changing Setting of Financial Advice

Co‑chief executive Kate Vennell of Mindful Money noted that the awards reflected a shift in the advisory sector, with a newer generation of advisers—some of whom are women—bringing a stronger emphasis on lifelong learning and client‑centric solutions. She highlighted finalists such as Melanie Clark, who recently joined Ethical Investing, as well as Carey Church and Rodger Spiller.

Industry Implications and Future Outlook

Vennell acknowledged that the repeated success of Pathfinder might reflect both its advanced capabilities and the relative lag of other managers in the ethical space. She suggested that increased competition could emerge as more funds develop deeper green strategies, potentially narrowing the gap.

The conversation also touched on the broader transformation of the advice industry since the introduction of a new financial advice regime three years ago. Veteran advisers have exited, while younger professionals are entering the market, bringing fresh perspectives on client behaviour and a stronger focus on continuous learning.

Vennell highlighted that advisers now often encounter clients amid significant life events—divorces, business sales, or inheritance—requiring a deep understanding of their needs beyond simple product recommendations.

They appear poised for continued evolution.

Overall, the awards signal a maturing market where responsible investing is increasingly woven into the fabric of New Zealand’s financial advisory services.

As demand grows and more advisers adopt ethical frameworks, the sector is changing.
